I will be focussing this blog on creating and maintaining a successful relationship after bariatric surgery. The numbers are out there for relationship challenges after bariatric surgery. The published divorce rate for our demographic is 75-85% on some websites. But an actual 2018 study completed in Sweden and published in the JAMA looked at the 4 and 10 year divorce rates for bariatric patients and found:
“After 4 years, the cumulative incidence of divorce/separation was 9.4% (n = 128 events) in the surgery group compared with 5.5% (n = 71 events) in the control group, and after 10 years it was 17.1% (n = 211 events) in the surgery group compared with 11.6% (n = 126 events) in the control group.”
JAMA Surg. 2018;153(7):654-661. doi:10.1001/jamasurg.2018.0215
I believe the 75%-85% article meant to say “higher” but it is misleading and did not present any citations and yet the top result in a Google search.
Nonetheless, there will be challenges and challenges can sometimes create tensions to rise and adversity to grow.
